FAQ : About E-Perm Testing Kits
This section provides detailed information About E-Perm Testing Kits, one of the most accurate and reliable tools for measuring RADON levels. You’ll learn how the E-PERM Electret Ion Chamber system works, how to set up and deploy the kit properly, and how to read and interpret the results.
These FAQs help you understand why E-PERM devices are widely used by C-NRPP certified professionals and how they ensure precise, tamper-resistant RADON measurements for both residential and commercial properties.
The E-PERM® (Electret-Passive Environmental RADON Monitor) is a reliable and widely used passive device for measuring RADON levels in air, water, and soil. Developed by Rad Elec Inc., it’s trusted by both professionals and homeowners for accurate short- and long-term testing.
How it Works:
The system uses two parts - a charged Teflon disc (electret) and an ionization chamber.
When RADON gas enters the chamber, it releases alpha particles that reduce the charge on the electret. The voltage drop is then measured to determine the average RADON concentration over the test period.
Testing options:
- Short-term: 2–7 days
- Long-term: up to 1 year
- Water or soil gas testing with special setups
Key advantages:
- Accurate and repeatable results
- No power needed during testing
- Works in various environments
- Suitable for professional and regulatory use
Note: Requires proper calibration and a special electrometer to read results.

Both E-PERM RADON test kits work on the same principle - using an electret, a charged Teflon disc that gradually loses voltage as it’s exposed to RADON gas and its decay particles.
The key differences are in chamber size, electret type, and exposure duration:
- Short-term kits: Use a larger chamber with a short-term electret, designed for testing periods of 4 to 90 days.
- Long-term kits: Use a smaller chamber with a long-term electret, designed for testing periods of 91 to 365 days.
Both types are reusable until the electret’s charge is fully depleted, providing accurate and cost-effective RADON measurement options for different testing durations.
The E-PERM RADON test duration depends on the type of kit you choose:
- Short-term test: Typically runs for 4 to 90 days.
- Long-term test: Can last from 91 days up to 1 year.
You can select either short-term or long-term testing based on how detailed or time-averaged you want your RADON results to be.
Each E-PERM RADON detector is pre-measured for its initial voltage before shipping.
To ensure accurate results, we recommend starting your RADON test within one week of receiving the device, as a small amount of charge may naturally dissipate over time.
The E-PERM RADON test kit price covers everything you need for accurate testing:
- The E-PERM test device
- Easy-to-follow instructions
- Laboratory analysis fees
- A return package
- A prepaid Canada Post mailer for convenient return shipping
Everything is included - no hidden or extra costs.
Follow these simple steps to start your E-PERM RADON test:
- Prepare your home:
Close all windows and exterior doors for at least 12 hours (or 24 hours for post-mitigation testing). - Start the test:
Record the start time on the instruction sheet, then open the chamber (do not open the electret). - During the test:
Leave the device in place for the selected testing period. - End the test:
Close the chamber and record the end time. -
Return your kit:
Place the E-PERM device and instruction sheet into the provided bag, attach the prepaid Canada Post mailer, and send it back to us.
The E-PERM RADON detector number is printed on the colored label (blue, brown, or red) located on the bottom of the Electret.
This number helps identify your specific test kit for lab analysis and reporting.
✅ Yes. The E-PERM RADON detector continues to measure RADON exposure until it’s sealed and the final voltage is read at the lab.
📦 If not sealed properly, it will keep detecting RADON during shipping, which can affect your results - especially for short-term tests.
To prevent this:
- Seal the chamber immediately after the test ends.
- Record the stop time accurately on the instruction sheet.
- Send the detector to the lab as soon as possible.
For short-term tests, even one extra day of exposure may change results.
For long-term tests, a short shipping delay usually has little impact.
Don’t panic - the E-PERM RADON detector does not contain any radioactive materials.
It’s made mostly of plastic, with a small metal spring inside.
However, we recommend contacting your veterinarian as a precaution to make sure your pet is safe.
If the RADON level is extremely high, the electret’s voltage can drop to zero (0) before the test ends. When this happens, it’s not possible to calculate the exact RADON concentration.
Don’t worry - we’ll provide a free retest under the same conditions to ensure accurate results.
All E-PERM RADON test kits are sent with enough initial voltage for normal testing levels.
Your report shows your measured RADON level, which is the key number to look for. Here’s how to interpret it:
- 🇨🇦 Health Canada Guideline: Less than 200 Bq/m³
- 🇺🇸 U.S. Action Level: Less than 148 Bq/m³
- 🌍 World Health Organization (WHO): Less than 100 Bq/m³
| (These numbers don’t represent a “safe” level - lower is always better.)
Test Result Colors
- 🟢 Green Result:
RADON level ≤ 75 Bq/m³ (heating season) or ≤ 50 Bq/m³ (non-heating season) - 🟡 Yellow Result:
RADON level > 75 Bq/m³ (heating season) or > 50 Bq/m³ (non-heating season), up to 400 Bq/m³ - 🔴 Red Result:
RADON level > 400 Bq/m³
